CASE 1
These are the X-rays of a cat which had been in a Road Traffic Accident (RTA
in vet shorthand)
X-ray 1
X-ray 2
The first X-ray shows a view of the lower back from the side. If you follow
the line of the backbones, you can see a gap where the tail has been broken
away (arrow). In the second view (right hand picture) You can see the back
legs extending down. The hip joint on the Right of the picture has been crushed
inwards. Surprisingly, such injuries often heal well given time,as long as
there has been no nerve damage. The bones may need pushing back into line
if they are pressing inwards on the bowel .In this case, there was no damage
to the major nerves, supplying the bladder or legs, but the tail was paralysed.
In such cases, it often has to be amputated as it can get caught in doorways,
fences, trees and so on.
Here
we've amputated the tail.
But the patient isn't too worried
