This is a scheme designed to allow pets back into the United Kingdom after they have been taken abroad. It only operates in certain countries, and via certain carriers.

The above precautions are designed to prevent rabies and other serious diseases from gaining a foothold in the UK. It is certainly worth considering whether or not your pet will be safe and enjoy the journey before travelling. It is also worth remembering that precautions are not always effective. At least 10 people in the UK die of malaria annually despite the availability of treatment.

Don't feel that with all the red tape and potential risks, it's just too much trouble to take your pet abroad. Already thousands of animals have travelled safely and happily on the PETS scheme, and the relative risks are quite small. Most vets are now quite used to the scheme, and will be happy to advise you.

Remember to consult your vet if your pet is unwell at any time after returning from a trip abroad.
